Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County offers Community-Based Mentoring, Sports Buddies, and Site-Based Mentoring Programs for socioeconomically disadvantaged kids (Littles), between the ages of 6-18, residing in Washington County. Through the Community-Based Mentoring and Sports Buddies Programs, Littles receive professionally supported mentoring from adult mentors (Bigs) until graduating from high school. The Site-Based Mentoring Program is offered in select elementary and middle schools within Washington County Public Schools, as well as the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County and Girls Inc. of Washington County. Littles in these select schools and afterschool programs receive professionally-supported mentoring until they advance to high school and may continue in one of the community-based programs at that time. Many of the mentoring relationships continue long after their formal closure.
By partnering with parents/guardians, volunteers and others in the community, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County is accountable for each child in their program achieving:
- Higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships
- Avoidance of risky behaviors
- Educational success
Since 1956, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County has operated under the belief that there is incredible potential inherent in every child. As part of the nation’s largest donor- and volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County makes and professionally supports meaningful, one-to-one matches between adult volunteers (Bigs) and children (Littles), ages 6 through young adulthood. They develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.
