Washington County to Receive Award from EFSP

Washington County to Receive $67,519 Award from the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program

United Way of Washington County will oversee distribution of federal funds made available through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program designated for Washington County, MD.  
 
Washington County will be awarded $67,519 under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. The funds are to be used by eligible local service agencies to supplement and expand the capacity of existing emergency food and shelter programs in Washington County. Funds are not to be used for creating new programs. A National Board made up of representatives from national organizations and chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designated the grant. The Washington County Emergency Food and Shelter Local Board, consisting of representatives from voluntary, governmental, and religious sectors will determine how to allocate the award among local, eligible, emergency food and shelter programs and final approval of the distribution of EFSP funds is then determined by the national EFSP board of directors. 
 
Under the terms of the grant from the national EFSP board, local agencies selected to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive Federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.
 
Washington County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously to CASA, Inc., Community Action Council, Interfaith Service Coalition, REACH, The Salvation Army, and St. Paul’s Tabitha’s Table.
