Community Initiatives

The most effective way to improve lives is to address the root causes of the community’s pressing issues.  The only way needs are reduced or eliminated is through community partnerships.  It takes everyone working together to make the biggest impact.  United Way of Washington County is proud to be a part of the following initiatives:

Teen Pregnancy Prevention
United Way is proud to be a partner in the efforts of the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition, Inc. The Coalition is comprised of concerned parents, youth and individuals representing the faith, education, business, medical, and public and non-profit communities. Its mission is to reduce teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections by encouraging youth to make healthy choices. Numerous strategies have been implemented by the Coalition, including creating community awareness through media, speakers bureau presentations and dicusssions with policy makers. It also is developing and expanding sexuality information resources for parents and teens.

Born Learning
United Way has partnered with the Washington County Community Partnership for Children and Families and the School Readiness Collaboration to launch a Born Learning Campaign. Born Learning is a national public engagement campaign helping parents, caregivers and communities create early learning opportunities for young children through play and everday activities. Learning begins at birth, and investing in early learning will ultimately pay huge dividends in the future, such as reduced crime, fewer teen pregnancies, more high school graduates and individual success in work and life. For more information on Born Learning or parent resources, call (301) 739-8200 x26 or go to www.bornlearning.org.

211
In 2000, the Federal Communications Commission designated “2-1-1” as the nationwide access number for information about health and human services and called upon organizations to collaborate in developing statewide 211 systems. The 211 system is designed to be a fast and convenient way to access hundreds of social services with a single call.

United Way officials and others have been working to bring the 211 system to Maryland since 2000.  Currently, four existing centers operate as pilot sites for the 211 system of Maryland.  These collectively cover 70% of the state and already receive more than 200,000 calls per year.  The pilot centers include:

*  Mental Health Association of Frederick County Hotline (Frederick County)
*  Community Crisis Services Inc. in Hyattsville (Prince George’s County)
*  Life Crisis Center in Salisbury (Lower Shore)
*  United Way of Central Maryland’s First Call for Help (Central Maryland)

By November 2006, 211 will be serving approximately 192 million Americans - over 65% of the US population; 209 active 2-1-1 systems covering all or part of 41 states (including 17 states with 100% coverage) plus Washington, DC and Puerto Rico.
