United Way 27th annual day of caring scheduled for september
HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 30, 2018) —
United Way of Washington County is pleased to host its 27th annual Day of Caring, the organization’s single biggest volunteer event, on Thursday, Sept. 20. Over 1,400 volunteers will complete 112 service projects at 36 local nonprofit organizations and 33 homes of the elderly and/or disabled. Projects will include painting, landscaping and more. The Day of Caring offers a Community Health Fair from 4 to 7 p.m. at Family Healthcare located at Cleveland Avenue. The Health Fair provides basic health screenings and information. Agencies will offer fun, educational and physical activities. Nutritious snacks will be available. The Day of Caring Book Drive is a collection of new and gently used books for children, ages 0-11. The collection is a partnership between United Way, Hagerstown Rotary Club, Hagerstown Area Religious Council, FedEx and Early Childhood Advisory Council. Last year, more than 14,000 books were collected. The Personal Caring Drive, offered by United Way and Community Action Council, is a collection of new personal hygiene items, such as shampoo and toothbrushes. The 2017 collection totaled over 5,000 items. Business and nonprofit professionals will read to Head Start pre-K classrooms and distribute age-appropriate books. Many local organizations serve as collection sites for these drives.
